- About Me
- Hailing from the quiet suburbs of northwestern Connecticut, Ras J grew up like a lot of kids in the seventies, listening to classic rock in a small town. But strangely enough, he did have a Jamaican family living across the street from him and was exposed to reggae and Jamaican culture at a very young age. Making his debut as ‘DJ Ras J’ on WECS 90.1 FM in Willimantic, CT in 1989, his groundbreaking radio show ‘Ewadjo’ included roots reggae, psychedelic rock, in-studio dub mixes and a live freestyle session, one of the first of its kind in the country. He went on to open for the Wailers in 1992 and moved to NYC as an intern at Cold Chillin’ Records that summer. At Cold Chillin’ Records, he met Kool G. Rap & DJ Polo, the Genius, Roxanne Shante and the Genius, under the guidance of O.J. Wedlaw, now a senior marketing professional at Universal Music. Over the next few years, he worked for a variety of major labels, promoting such artists as Buju Banton, Red Fox, Born Jamericans, Tony Rebel, Damian Marley and the Wu Tang Clan. He also worked part time as a roadie for Wild Apache Productions and dancehall legend Super Cat. Since then, he has continued to increase his vast reggae collection and in 2002 returned to the stage, opening for Buju at the Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, NC. With a warm reception to his classic dancehall selections, he currently hosts a monthly roots party called ‘Simmer Down,’ reaching out to the masses with positive vibes and a conscious message of peace, love and unity.
