Anguile & The High Steppers Gave Boston A Triptic Reggae Nite Thursday April 15th 2010 at Johnny D's in Somerville Ma.

On the Bill, Anguile, Rashani and reggae legend Winston Watson of The Meditations shared the stage backed by new comer to the Boston scene, The High Steppers, Anguile's Roots Reggae Dub band. The night was beautiful and the weather clement enough to provide for a nice evening amongst friends. Inside Johnny D's after the early show the band set-up and started at around 10.30pm.

Anguile opened the night, with an afro vibed improve that didn't sound like one, said Paul Mathieu, a visitor from Colorado and a friend of Anguile. It wasn't a song from Anguile's first cd, just an improvisation led by the master of ceremony himself (Anguile) accompanied by some nice African djembe riddims from Bruce "Skanky Beat" Lerner, and Dave "Dubwise" Tower on percussion, followed by the rest of the band into a groovy afro fusion reggae intro. Anguile singing in some foreign African language (Mpongwe) was just calling on the spirits from Africa to come out and bless the evening in the name of Jah.

The night followed with several songs from Anguile's first album like "Oh Africa", "Negre Blanc" and "God Knows your name". The High Steppers are Josh Wilkie "Big Dog" on Bass, Bruce Lerner "Skanky B" on Guitar, Brendan Plesha "Wiz Kid" on Guitar, Greg Barnum on Drums, Dave "Dubwise" Tower on percussion, Koga Rite on Keybaords, and Bruno Anguile on Lead vocals/Melodica.

Anguile finished his first part around 11pm and Rashani came on and got the crowd dancing with a mix of his songs like, "who is gona save who", "I must be ready", R.E.G.G.A.E" from his older albums and songs from his newest cd "Victim of the System" like "Balling" and "Revolution Time". The night was hot and the band sounded good while they were working the crowd nicely. Rashani touched on some serious subject in his songs but the mood was always Irie and the crowd dancing and enjoying themselves. You can check him out on http://rashanimusic.com/

Rashani

Than the legend himself Winston Watson of The Meditations, took the stage shortly after 11.30pm and delivered an energy filled classic roots reggae set with songs like "Senorita", "Jail house", "Moses", and "Woman is like a shadow" one of reggae greatest hit. The crowd was moved and danced the night away on these old classic. Winston showed that he still had it in him to be the great performer/vocalist that impressed many through the ages.
Winston was shortly followed by Anguile, as the band just kept on going to try to keep all involved in the night and forget that they all had to go to work the next day. A few left but most of the 150 there that night stayed to hear Anguile's second set.

Anguile delivered his second set of Afro Dub roots reggae with a preview to his new work with the Boston "High Steppers" by performing an improvisation called "ScatCat in Paris", followed by more songs from his album"Wisdom of the King" like "Change ton Pas" and "Lion of Zion". He ended his set with a party song "Part Party" joined on stage by Rashani delivering some hot freestyle calypso/dance hall vibes making everyone dance. Finally Winston finished this great night with a cover of Bob Marley "Get up Stand up". Finally the night was over as "Luv Bug Sound System" spinned some old school reggae to end the night.

Anguile at Johnny D's

By the time if was all done, 1am had come by and most people realized they had to go home. However everyone had a smile on their face and felt like they witnessed a great moment in reggae music moment in Boston. This was a TripTic reggae night indeed, a trip to Africa, and a trip to the land of reggae with 3 great singers, all with their own style, backed by a very solid roots reggae band "The High Steppers". The Krucial Reggae movement surely had a great evening to remember and hopefully this will help continue to build the very strong reggae scene in New England. Anguile and The High Steppers are here to stay so check them out next time they are in your area, you wont be disappointed.

One Love,
